Love is like a Lightning Bug

Love is like a lightning bug,
it consumes you as soon as you see it
Illuminating your eyes,
drawing your attention
You only saw it for a second before it was gone
The bright light flickers when you least expect it,
startling you with excitement
The warm summer night feels intimate,
almost peaceful even
But here you are chasing a firefly in circles around the grass in your yard
Just to say you caught it,
if only for a minute
Before you can grab the luminescence of another catches your eye
A dozen more tiny glowing spots fill the dark void,
sparkling like a stream of waves
You are mesmerized and obsessed with its beauty
No one can catch them all,
even if you do the glow doesn’t last forever
Trying to keep something alive in a jar will eventually kill it
A feeling so fleeting you don’t know what you had until it's gone
The sun will rise and you won’t be able to see the lightning bugs
But you still wait for it to be dark again every day.
